Title

The Hayward Nursing Home is a Medicare certified, skilled nursing facility licensed by the State of Wisconsin. It adjoins Hayward Area Memorial Hospital and two medical clinics.

The 74-bed facility is housed in a two-story building with both private and semi-private rooms, common areas, visiting rooms, a beauty shop and a large outdoor deck. The resident care center is situated on beautifully wooded lands that are home to many species of birds and wild life. Large windows offer views of nature and her creatures.

Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants provide care 24-hours a day. Residents can receive physical, occupational, speech or respiratory therapy services without ever leaving the building. A 24-hour physician staffed emergency room is located in the hospital should a medical emergency occur.

Activity professionals and volunteers offer group and individual activities including social, religious, recreational and educational programs. A computer with Internet access is available to all residents. In addition, Hayward area clergy hold regular religious services in the care center and make individual visits on request.

Hayward Nursing Home staff have recently begun to make dramatic changes in the long term care center. All staff are involved in a project called Home Again. The goal of Home Again is a complete culture change. The cultural change at HNH began with the education of employees and volunteer family members who learned how to transform a medical model of caring for older citizens into a social or home model. Class members learned about such things as putting the person before the task, human values, homelessness, the importance of daily pleasures and more. The classes prepared staff for the schedule changes that needed to be made to make daily life in an institution more like living a day at home. The word “choices” became the watchword of the day and will remain so in the years to come. Some physical alterations in the existing nursing home were made as well. One such modification involved building a kitchenette in a commons area to accommodate family style serving. Another resulted in removing two rooms from service in the long term care center. One room was made into a lounge area that is used for small or private gatherings. The second will feature a large, spa-like bathing area which will house an adaptive, whirlpool bath tub for relaxing bathing. Warm colors and new elements of décor have made hallways and common areas feel more like a home and a viewing garden and newly remodeled deck gives added pleasure to those who like the outdoors. These changes have been made or will be made in the very near future. What comes next is a proposal for a major project that would add more choices for those now living on the medical campus and those who may elect to make their home there in the future.
